THE CONVENTS ROUTE IN MORELOS

The Convents Route is formed by 28 ancient sanctuaries, the Morelos Convent Route has become an essential travel. Mostly built during the first century of Colony, these historic venues were started by Franciscans, Dominicans and Augustinians at the beginning of their construction. These ancient fortresses were designed based on the European monasteries, but adapted to the region circumstances.

Cuernavaca, Tepoztlan, Yecapixtla, Oaxtepec, Tlayacapan, Atlatlauhcan, Jiutepec, Zacualpan, Xochitepec, Yautepec, Tlaquiltenango and other municipalities are part of this historic-cultural travel. The monasteries in Tepoztlan, Atlatlahuacan y Yecapixtla are characterized by their appearance of medieval fortresses. The San Juan Bautista monastery in Tlayacapan and the Santo Domingo monastery in Oaxtepec stand out due to their mural preservation.

In Cuernavaca, the Ex Convento de la Asuncion, which was built during the 16th Century, raises today as the Cathedral of the “City of the Eternal Spring”, also sheltering the Templo del Carmen, Templo Dolores and the Templo de la Tercera Orden.

Near the capital of Morelos, Jiutepec holds the Templo of Santiago Apostol, former monastery started by the Franciscans between 1525 and 1529, which stands out for possessing three historic alterpieces: one of neo-classic style and two of baroque style.

The ex Convento de San Juan Bautista in Tlayacapan, the Santo Domingo in Oaxtepec, the San Guillermo in Totolapan, the San Juan Evangelista in Xochitepec, the Convento San Lucas in Mazatepec, and 20 more are part of the awarded Convent Route in Morelos.
